Well as you may know, in America, we have just elected a new President, who will be taking over January 20th 2017. No matter how you feel about the President-Elect and his future administration, one thing remains constant – you want more in 2017.
Many of you plan to stick it out for 2016, until after the holidays and then the holiday bills, but you still want to be ready for new opportunities in the new year.
I’ve been on this planet for 43 years and have seen several elections and from an HR mindset (because I have a Master’s in HR and a genuine curiosity about work) I have noticed that no matter who gets elected; which political party takes over, that for a few months the job market will be extremely competitive.
I believe 2017 will be no different. In fact, I recently read an article predicting 2017 resume trends, which said there will be more competition then ever – and that’s why you must be prepared.
Here are some tips on how to prepare for a job search in 2017
1. Be honest about your current situation. If you have no degree or certifications, just understand you may have a tough time with your job search. Understand your weaknesses and strengths and really think about what you want to do.
2. Check your network. Somehow we believe that if we have hundreds, maybe thousands, of followers and friends, that we have a valuable network, but that’s not true. Check your network, maybe some of them have retired, gotten laid off, decided to launch their own business, fallen ill, or having a tough time themselves. If that is the case, then they won’t be able to help you find a job and the number 1 way to get a job is through a referral! Check your network.
3. Update your credentials. Yes, as a resume writer of course I am going to suggest that you update your resume credentials but it not only because it’s my business, it’s because it is very important, just ask any recruiter. They are looking at everything now – your resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile and social media. Get yourself updated.
4. Don’t wait till 2017 to look for a job in 2017, many companies will still be hiring during the holidays with start dates for early 2017. Instead of waiting until after the new year hangover and bills, get started now so you can start a new job while others are looking.
